নদীবেষ্টিত বদ্বীপ অঞ্চলের মানুষ, তাঁদের জীবনযাপন, দর্শন, ভাষা ও সংগীতসহ সংস্কৃতির প্রবহমানতায় একটি বিশেষ মৌলিক চেহারা নির্মিত হয়। সেই বৈশিষ্ট্য অবলোকন করার প্রক্রিয়ায় ওয়াকিলুর রহমান স্থানীয় উপাদানকে অবলম্বন করেছেন। এ-অঞ্চলের প্রকৃতি, প্রাকৃতিক উপকরণ ও সহজাত করণকৌশল - এই তিনটি উপাদান তাঁর নিরীক্ষার বিষয়। আশ্রয় করেছেন পানি, কাদামাটি, নৌকা ও ভাষাকে।
বৈশ্বিক সমকালীনতার মধ্যে দেশজ অনুষঙ্গকে প্রাসঙ্গিক করে দৃশ্যশিল্পের স্বরূপ রচনা করেছেন ওয়াকিলুর রহমান বর্তমান প্রদর্শনীতে।
বেঙ্গল আর্টস প্রোগ্রাম-নিবেদিত ওয়াকিলুর রহমানের স্থাপনাধর্মী প্রদর্শনী মনন খনন দেশজ অস্তিত্বের খোঁজে নতুন দৃষ্টি ও গভীর অন্বেষায় আলোকপাত করবে বলে আমাদের বিশ্বাস। প্রদর্শনীটি ৫ জুলাই শুক্রবার সন্ধ্যা ৬.৩০টায় বেঙ্গল শিল্পালয়ের কামরুল হাসান প্রদর্শনশালায় উদ্বোধন করা হবে। এ আয়োজনে প্রধান অতিথি থাকবেন অধ্যাপক আবুল মনসুর।

The people of the delta region, their way of life, philosophy, language, and music - all contribute to creating a distinct evolving culture. In an attempt to map its characteristics, Wakilur Rahman has resorted to local elements. The topography of the region, its indigenous materials, innate techniques and understandings - are the three main components of his experimentation. In his quest, the artist has depended on water, clay, boats, and language.
In the current exhibition, Wakilur Rahman has crafted the essence of a visual art language by making indigenous elements relevant within a global contemporary context.
Presented by the Bengal Arts Program, Wakilur Rahman's installation-based exhibition Monon Khonon (Unearthing the archaic), we believe, will shed new light on and create deeper understandings of our own existence.

এ অঞ্চলের প্রাচীন মন ও স্থানিক জনজীবনের যৌথ মানুষিক অবস্থান নিয়ে ভাবনা - প্রকৃতি, সংস্কৃতি, প্রযুক্তি এবং জগতের সঙ্গে মানবিক সম্পর্কের চিত্রটি নকশিকাঁথার মতো অলংকরণে ভরা। যেখানে মন ও বস্তু একসঙ্গে চলতে থাকে এবং আমাদের ঐতিহাসিক অতীত ও বর্তমানকে রূপ দেয়।
বিস্তীর্ণ জলের দেহ, জলে ভেজা নরম মাটি, বৈচিত্র্যময় ও শক্তিশালী প্রকৃতি, সমতলের বাতাস ও স্থানিক সৃজনশীল বস্তুগত লক্ষণগুলো অনুধাবনে কিছুটা ধারণা তৈরি করতে পারি, যা খ-িত ও অস্পষ্ট। তারপরও সেগুলো ব্যাখ্যার প্রতিশ্রুতি বহন করে, আভাস দেয়। অস্তিত্ব বিনির্মাণের সংস্কৃতি ও আমাদের মনোজগতের জট খোলার জন্য, বোঝার জন্যই মনন খনন।

Our inner landscape resonates with the ancient soul of this region, deeply intertwined with the local lived experience. It is a rich tapestry of nature, material culture, technology, and, above all, our interaction with the environment. This experience unfolds like the intricate embroidery of Nakshikantha, where mind and matter work together to shape both our historical past and our present.
The vast expanse of bodies of water, drenched soil, and the winds of the plains reflect a diverse yet powerful nature, influencing the tangible expressions of our local creativity. Although these cultural manifestations may appear fragmented, ambiguous, and resistant to interpretation, they hold rich treasures within their many layers. ‘Unearthing the Archaic’ seeks to unravel the complex threads of our material culture, delving into the essence of the spiritual and material embodiment of its people.

ওয়াকিলুর রহমান চিত্রকলা, ছাপাইচিত্র, ভাস্কর্য, স্থাপনাসহ দৃশ্যশিল্পের নানা মাধ্যমে কাজ করেন। আশির দশকের রাজনীতি-সচেতন ‘সময়’ শিল্পীদলের অন্যতম সদস্য হিসেবে তাঁর কাজে নিরীক্ষামূলক স্বাতন্ত্র্য পরিলক্ষিত হয়। তাঁর শিল্পযাত্রায় আগ্রহের বিষয় বাংলা ক্যালিগ্রাফি বা লিপি, বিশেষ করে শব্দের আঙ্গিক, বর্ণমালার আকার এবং তার দৃশ্যগত অর্থ নির্মাণ। স্থাপত্যকলার সঙ্গে দৃশ্যশিল্পের পারস্পরিক আদানপ্রদান তিনি অন্বেষণ করেন।
ওয়াকিলুর রহমান চারুকলা অনুষদ, ঢাকা বিশ^বিদ্যালয় থেকে ১৯৮১ সালে স্নাতক হন। ১৯৮৬ সালে তিনি সেন্ট্রাল একাডেমি অব ফাইন আর্টস, বেইজিং, থেকে এম এফ এ লাভ করেন। ১৯৮৬ সাল থেকে চীন, বাংলাদেশ, জার্মানিসহ বিভিন্ন দেশে তাঁর অর্ধশতাধিক একক প্রদর্শনী আয়োজিত হয়েছে। প্রায় চার দশককাল তিনি ঢাকা ও বার্লিনের মধ্যে সময় ভাগ করে আন্তর্জাতিক অঙ্গনে কাজ করেছেন।
বর্তমানে ওয়াকিলুর রহমান কিউরেটর হিসেবে কলাকেন্দ্র গ্যালারি পরিচালনা করছেন। তিনি এশিয়া প্যাসিফিক ইউনিভার্সিটির স্থাপত্য বিভাগে ভিজিটিং ফ্যাকাল্টি হিসেবে নিয়োজিত। ওয়াকিলুর রহমানের জন্ম ১৯৬১ সালে, সাভার, ঢাকায়।

Wakilur Rahman works in various mediums of visual art, including painting, printmaking, sculpture, and installations. As a key member of the politically conscious ‘Shomoy’ group of artists of the 1980s, his work is marked by distinctive experimentation. His artistic inquiry focuses on Bengali calligraphy or script, especially the forms of words, the shapes of alphabets, and their visual meaning. He is also keen on the exchanges between architecture and visual art.
A graduate of the Faculty of Fine Arts, University of Dhaka (1981), Wakilur Rahman earned an MFA from the Central Academy of Fine Arts, Beijing (1986). Since then, he has had over fifty solo exhibitions in various countries, including China, Bangladesh, and Germany. For nearly four decades, he has been working internationally, while dividing his time between Dhaka and Berlin. Currently, Wakilur Rahman is serving as the curator of Kalakendra. He is also engaged as a visiting faculty member in the Architecture Department of the Asia Pacific University, Dhaka. Wakilur Rahman was born in 1961, in Savar, Dhaka.
